The day upon what is believed to be St. Patrick’s death, March 17, has been celebrated in Ireland as a religious holiday for more than 1,000 years. His backstory and legacy are completely ingrained into Irish history, and one his most well-known legends is the story of how he explained the Holy Trinity using the three leaves of a native Irish clover, the shamrock.

What was once a Roman Catholic day of feasting amidst the days of Lent has since turned into a full day of partying and parading. This turn of celebration happened around 1772 when Irish soldiers serving in the English military grew homesick and organized a march in New York City on St. Patrick’s Day. The passion and exuberance for the day grew from there in the hundreds of years to follow.

America quickly adopted the holiday as so many roots can be traced back Irish immigrant ancestors. St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated all over with the general theme of green, shamrocks, good food and large drinks. How are you celebrating St. Patrick’s Day this year?
