Weekend Plans: Oaklawn Racing Season Opens, Katy Perry and More


Block, Beer & Bourbon, benefiting KUAR and KLRE, is one of the newest and most anticipated events to the Central Arkansas charitable calendar. Enjoy the music of Rodney Block and the Rodney Block Collective in the historic surroundings of the Junior League of Little Rock, while sipping a curated selection of craft beer and bourbon with friends from 7 to 10 p.m. The Junior League is located in downtown Little Rock at 401 Scott St. General admission tickets are $75 and VIP tickets are $150. The 114th live race meet at Oaklawn kicks off this Friday. The 57-day Oaklawn season is highlighted by $30 million in total purses and 31 stakes races. The 2018 live racing season runs through Saturday, April 14 on a Thursday through Sunday basis. For more information visit oaklawn.com. Mega-star Katy Perry will perform with special guest Carly Rae Jepsen at Verizon Arena in North Little Rock starting at 7:30 p.m. Witness: The Tour is an imaginative trip from outer-space to inner-space, from the planets to the bottom of our oceans, and a musical journey through Katy Perry’s biggest milestones and mega-hits right up to her latest album. The dramatically original staging means that there isn’t a bad seat in the house, when Katy brings out her band and dancers, along with all the bells and whistles. Tickets cost between $26 and $127 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster.

2nd Friday Art Night is downtown Little Rock’s after hours art and culture event, happening every month. Spend your Friday evening enjoying premier galleries and museums as well as discovering pop-up artists and entertainers on the sidewalks in between. It’s free to attend and transportation between venues is provided by the Rock Region METRO Streetcar as well as a wheeled trolley. The monthly event is hosted by downtown Little Rock businesses and lasts from 5 to 8 p.m.


The Museum of Discovery is hosting Star Wars Science from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bring your little (or big) Jedi for a day of fun to explore the science in Star Wars. Great for all ages! Cost is $8 – $10. Just a few of the many activities you can expect are: shadow & light play, alien playdough, meet Star Wars characters, Star Wars coding, face painting, Stomp Rockets, a Jedi training course and more. The schedule for Stars Wars-themed shows is as follows:

  • Awesome Science Star Wars Shows 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
  • Sith Lightning Tesla Shows 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
