We were so enamored with Penny Beebe’s front porch that we asked for a tour of her home, which was being renovated. Impressed, we asked to feature it. “Oh, my. I’m honored. You should come back in May. My home sings in the summer,” Beebe said. We agree. Beebe, an interior designer by trade, has lived in the home eight years. She loves to entertain. “I love this house. I enjoy throwing themed parties, and this house is perfect for that.”

To “lighten the existing spaces,” visually and physically, Beebe used her own intuition and employed the talents of Cobblestone & Vine as well as Providence Design and Phinality Design. “We used antiquing techniques, a mixture of architectural elements, new furnishings and a bit of ‘frou-frou,’ to make my home more interesting and more open,” she said.

Beebe’s formal living room is designed to look and feel good. The fireplace, recently redesigned by Phinality Design, sets the tone. A backless sofa adds seating while allowing others a view and warmth. She placed matching swivel chairs on either side of a burl wood table — it seems to simply float in the center of the room — which brings visual warmth, modernity and function to the space. “I love pink. So I added touches here and there,” Beebe said. “It’s just enough.”

Furnished with charm, the rear patio has just the right amount of plants, accents and seating — it’s cozy, not crowded, intimate, not closed and Beebe’s touch — mixing texture and color just so — makes for a great transition from indoors to out.

This music room is fittingly dominated by a small grand piano, illuminated by a lovely chandelier, which Beebe chose because “it’s elegant without being too formal.” A large crimson painting brings a pop of color to the room and is flanked by glass front cabinets — each lit from within — that provide additional storage, which is key for Beebe, who loves to host dinner parties, wine nights and other gatherings.

To help “lighten” the kitchen, Beebe had the cabinetry next to the stove removed and replaced with substantial cedar shelving, which was aged and stained to match the room’s beams. The remaining cabinets were painted sea foam and moss and the hardware was finished in the same golden color that was used to finish the cabinets. An alcove of shelves surrounds the Viking cooktop.
Just above the doorway, Bonnie & Rosco Decorative Artists painted the phrase “Vous estes mon soleil” — “You Are My Sunshine” — an ode to Beebe’s children.

Two large pots topped with glass and flanked by wicker seats along with a pair of chaise lounges set the stage for poolside dining. Surrounded by an abundance of trees, Beebe’s backyard is a welcoming oasis.

Just a few steps away from the home and pool, this stoned patio features a woodburning fireplace and Adirondack seats, perfect for cool nights and hot dog roasts and making s’mores.
