Out and About: Fighting Hunger

September is Hunger Action Month, and today is Hunger Action Day. Each day, according to Feeding American, more than 573,000 Arkansans experience food insecurity, meaning that at times they lacked access to enough food for an active, healthy life for all their household members and had limited availability of nutritionally adequate foods.

Angela at Big Orange MidtownImagine sitting in class, trying to listen to your teacher explain multiplication or trying to learn how to make nouns and verb plural, while experiencing hunger pains. Or not only being hunger, but embarrassed as well, because your classmates can hear your stomach growling.

Imagine eating only one meal today, because you purchased your blood pressure or arthritis medicine instead of food.

These scenarios likely happen daily in Arkansas — we rank first in senior hunger and severe hunger, second in food insecurity and third in child hunger … but we can make a difference.

Donate money or nonperishable foods to your local foodbank, or organize a fundraiser or food drive at your place of employment or church.

To raise awareness of hunger in Arkansas, wear orange today. Already dressed? That’s OK.

Big Orange Burger with BaconGrab your coworkers, friends and/or family and enjoy a meal or signature drink at one of Little Rock’s Big Orange restaurants today through Monday; a portion of the proceeds from select food items will benefit the Arkansas Foodbank.

Get social with it: post a selfie of you balancing a spoon on your nose along with information about your local foodbank and challenge other to do the same during “Spoontember”; be sure to use the hashtags #spoontember, #nokidhungry and #hungeractionmonth.
