In our Lunching in Little Rock blog series, Michael Kirkpatrick will explore and review the best restaurants in Little Rock and its surrounding area – all in time to get back to the office. This week, Michael ate lunch at McBride’s Café and Bakery.
This past week was Spring Break, a fun time for my kids and a problem for my wife and me. We don’t get a week off work, but we still have to provide entertainment for the boys, plus get to watch them relax and unwind while we toil away at the office. Ok, so it’s not that bad, but we didn’t do that this year. We scheduled pain for Spring Break ’18.
My youngest son, Walden, had his tonsils removed on Tuesday. This meant picking my older son, Willem, up at noon and waiting around for Walden to wake up. There are a few times in life when you have to spend your day in a hospital. Food is often the only marker of time or entertainment. So, some of my reviews will cover food options at our local hospitals. First up is McBride’s Café and Bakery at Baptist Health.
McBride’s is a bit of a walk from Baptist Towers. The cafeteria, Boulevard Bread Company, and Subway are all closer, but I promise you it’s worth the hike. Willem and I found parking on the back side of the hospital. Nestled in the corner, the ordering process at McBride’s is a bit strange. Things get busy around lunch. Be sure to check the daily specials and you usually have to get there early if you want one; they go fast. Willem and I are here for the classics: burgers and barbecue sandwiches with chips. Since the restaurant is inside Baptist, they have Pepsi products in the soda fountain, but you can get Coke products in an ice cold can. There’s nothing particularly special about the burgers, but my son and I had a delicious lunch in the restaurant’s tiny dining space.
Walden’s surgery turned out fantastic, as did Willem’s golf camp, and the rest of their spring break. As a dad, the highlights of my spring break were a successful surgery for one son and eating a great burger with the other. If you have to spend time at the hospital, try to eat well. You need your strength and sanity. Eat at McBride’s.
