Lunching in Little Rock: Leon’s Catfish & Shrimp with Sissy Jones

In our Lunching in Little Rock blog series, Michael Kirkpatrick will explore and review the best restaurants in Little Rock and its surrounding area – all in time to get back to the office. This week, Michael ate lunch at Leon’s Catfish & Shrimp in Pine Bluff with Sissy Jones of Sissy’s Log Cabin.

There are times in life when you need to make a big impression. Valentine’s Day is Wednesday and it’s one of those times. There is no better way to make a big and positive impression than with jewelry. And there’s no one in Arkansas who knows more about selecting that special piece than Mrs. Sissy Jones of Sissy’s Log Cabin. I invited Mrs. Sissy to lunch and she invited me to her flagship store in Pine Bluff and Leon’s Catfish & Shrimp.

Upon arriving at the store, Sissy and her sales associates were instantly welcoming. The inside is purposefully manicured by Mrs. Sissy herself and she points out special pieces and displays. Her office is also decorated perfectly and displays over 40 years of awards, family photos and angels. I felt an immediate connection with Mrs. Sissy. She told me of her humble beginnings, renting the very building we were in for $50 a month and selling consignment furniture before getting into the consignment jewelry business.

She has many sayings by which she does business and lives her life, but my favorite is, “God owns these stores and we work for him,” which puts a completely different perspective on business standards and appreciation. She told me of her battle with cancer in recent years, the struggle it presented, and the outlook it gave her.

“Regrets of yesterday and the fear of tomorrow are the twin thieves that rob you of your happiness today,” she says.

Cancer didn’t change the way she conducted business, but it changed the way she saw other people in pain. As a result, she started committing less time to working and more time to helping. Mrs. Sissy has always put her faith in God and people.

Mrs. Sissy drove me to one of her favorite lunch places in Pine Bluff, Leon’s Catfish & Shrimp. It was hopping on a Friday at lunch, but as soon as they saw her, they got us a table. As we sat, the hush puppies also hit the table and they were hot, golden and fresh. We each had the fried catfish, with an extra large baked potato, and coleslaw. I’ve never had a baked potato with my catfish, but it really works! The amount of food was impressive and Mrs. Sissy insisted we take the leftovers back to the store.

Leon’s made me bust my diet in a second. I will cut carbs another day. On the other hand, Mrs. Sissy’s wisdom and hospitality made me strive to be a better person and businessman. Jewelry is a great way to make a big impression on your loved one. Mrs. Sissy made a huge impression on me. Visit a Sissy’s Log Cabin location today for your Valentine and visit Leon’s Catfish & Shrimp for a pre-Valentine’s dinner treat.
