As social media continues to shape career aspirations for younger generations, one Arkansas media executive is encouraging aspiring content creators to focus on purpose, persistence and making a meaningful impact.

A recent study found that more than half of young people want to grow up to become influencers, whether on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube or other streaming platforms. As interest in content creation continues to grow, there is a greater push to show upcoming generations how those aspirations can become sustainable careers.

Arkansas native Heather Baker has done just that.

With three decades of experience in media, Baker has built a career that spans sales, publishing and digital content. She currently serves as president and publisher of AY Magazine, Arkansas Money & Politics and other publications under AY Media Group.

Baker said passion has been a driving force behind her success.

“Having that passion behind what I’m doing and the way I deliver it is the key,” Baker said.

Her path to leadership was not always straightforward. Baker began her career in sales before eventually teaching herself the skills needed to become a publisher. Today, as she celebrates 30 years in the business, she is sharing lessons learned with the next generation of creators and entrepreneurs.

“I challenge them to find a mentor. I challenge them to learn, to listen,” Baker said. “So, the more you can take in, sometimes you don’t really want somebody telling you what to do, but those people that will, those are going to be the biggest key factors in your life. You have to make decisions on what you want, and you have to stick with it, and you have to push through it, no matter what you have to overcome.”

For Baker, content creation and media are about more than gaining attention. She views her work as an opportunity to create positive change and help others.

“I just want to make sure that I’m doing the very best I can at all times. I’m learning, I’m growing, I’m, I’m, you know, pouring the Holy Spirit into everything that I do, and I’m making a difference for people, and I’m helping people,” Baker said.

Her mission, she said, is simple.

“I just want to leave this place better than I found it, and I want to use every bit of talent God gave me,” Baker said.

As social media platforms continue to expand and more people enter the content creation space, Baker believes there is room for everyone willing to find their niche and work hard.

“There’s room in this market for everyone. There is. You have to figure out what you’re best at and do it,” Baker said.

She also encouraged aspiring creators not to become discouraged by setbacks.

“Be creative, be persistent, and treat every no as fuel. Never lose your drive, you know, you have to earn it, you have to keep going all the time,” Baker said.

Looking ahead, Baker said she plans to continue using her work to invest in the people of Arkansas while serving as a mentor for others hoping to follow a similar path in media and content creation.
