For every true American, the Fourth of July is about more than cookouts and sparklers. It is a time to reflect on the many freedoms we enjoy in the U.S. that are merely a dream for people in other countries around the world.

This year, of course, there is an extra zing to Independence Day as the country reaches a milestone 250th birthday. What a privilege it is to be able to experience this once-in-a-lifetime moment and take the time to think about all that our nation has stood for and accomplished during the past 250 years.

This issue of AY About You pays homage to the occasion by providing a look at Arkansas250 activities happening around the state. We also bring you a list of 190 great things to experience in Arkansas in honor of the 190th anniversary of Arkansas statehood. From food and festivals to communities and the great outdoors, our list will give you ample adventures to last the rest of the year and then some.

Other patriotic articles this month include a reminder of flag etiquette, a look at Civil War reenactments in the state, a roundup of Arkansas’ national cemeteries, and a visit to a local VFW post to learn how the Veterans of Foreign Wars continues to provide community and fellowship to our nation’s heroes.

This month, we also salute the guys in our lives with our annual Men’s Issue, which includes information about staying healthy and vital at any age. That is not to mention our annual Men of Distinction, dedicated to outstanding men doing their part to uplift their communities. This one is for the fellas (and those who love them).

As you gather with family and friends, remember July 4 is more than a day off of work. It is a time to truly appreciate the honor and responsibility of what it is to be American in 2026. No matter how difficult life may seem today, it is nothing compared to the hardships and challenges of the people who came before us. May their pioneering spirit, grit and gumption inspire us today to make the next chapter of our beloved nation its greatest and most glorious.

Happy Birthday, America!
