‘Flipped’ Tells of Journey From Tragedy to Triumph

Flipped, the tale of an Arkansas family’s powerful journey from tragedy to triumph, was released last week, along with a corresponding resource website for those struggling with similar experiences.

The book details the journey of Northwest Arkansas’ Tommy Van Zandt and his family following a tragic neck injury that left him paralyzed. The book is written by Van Zandt’s brother-in-law and business partner Mark Saviers.

In 2008, Van Zandt fell from a ladder, breaking his neck at the C-2 vertebrae. In an instant, his life was flipped, as were the lives of everyone in his family. The book provides readers with an inside look at their journey as detailed through the journal entries of Saviers, as well as journal entries from Tommy’s wife, Robyn, and letters from friends and family.

According to the book’s author, Flipped explores how to trust God in the most uncertain and difficult circumstances, how to experience the blessing of surrendering to God rather than fighting for the illusion of control and how to overcome feeling chained by the effects of a disability or illness.

In addition to the book, a website has launched – flippedstory.com – as a resource to individuals whose lives have also been “flipped.”

Van Zandt says he hopes the book and the website will help others as they surmount the challenges following tragedy. He believes he was saved for a purpose, and part of that purpose is to share his story and help others triumph over tragedy.

“Your life can be flipped,” says Van Zandt. “Maybe it’s a death in the family, a job loss, or anything else in your life that causes you to be flipped.”

The website aims to be a guide for anyone who has experienced pain, whether it be physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually. The website links to a number of different legal, financial and caregiver resources. The site also features a blog that will share powerful stories, like Van Zandt’s.
