What is the first thing people get wrong about utility and heavy construction work?
Most people don’t realize how much planning, safety and precision go into every job. Utility and heavy construction aren’t just “putting lines in.” It’s engineering, coordination with multiple agencies, ensuring system reliability, and doing all of it while keeping our crews and the public safe. What looks simple on the surface takes a whole team working together with intention and expertise.
What kinds of projects is NOEC usually working on?
We handle a little bit of everything. Our work ranges from new construction, bringing power and fiber into new developments and neighborhoods, to maintenance and upgrades in established communities. We also provide storm restoration, emergency response, underground and overhead line installation, and full turnkey utility infrastructure. If it involves power, fiber or right of way, we’re equipped to build it, repair it or restore it.
I’m going to be doing some digging in my front yard for [insert DIY project here], and I don’t think I’m going to run into any utility lines — I’m pretty sure, anyway. What’s the worst that could happen?
The “worst” ranges from knocking out the power or internet for your whole street to breaking a water or gas line to putting yourself in a dangerous or deadly situation. It only takes one wrong shovel strike to cause a death or create a major problem. That’s why calling 811 before you dig is a must. It’s free, it’s quick, and it can save you and your neighbors a lot of headaches or worse.
What sets NOEC Construction apart from other contractors?
At NOEC, we’re built on experience, accountability and culture. Our crews aren’t just workers — they’re drillers, linemen and operators who take pride in what they do. We don’t treat people like numbers, and we won’t ask anyone to do a job we wouldn’t do ourselves. We care about the communities we work in, we focus on long-term relationships, and we stand behind the quality of our work. That commitment shows in every project we touch across the state of Arkansas.
What tools does your company use to improve efficiency, accuracy and overall project performance?
Most recently, we added the new Vermeer D24, which I believe is one of only 10 units currently in the United States, giving us advanced drilling capabilities, improved precision and greater productivity on complex underground projects. In December, Digital Control Incorporated brought in the new DigiTrak ARES Locator for a demo with Vermeer MidSouth that we were very grateful to be a part of. Hard work and physical labor make it all happen, but we also know that cutting-edge technology will set the guys in the field apart from other contractors.
