Artists Host Classes at South Arkansas Arts Center

The South Arkansas Arts Center will host a beginners’ pastel workshop class taught by Kelly Campbell on Saturday, August 12. Join Campbell from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and learn the basics of using soft pastels on sanded paper. Students will also learn to do underpainting and the basics of using different kinds of soft pastels to create an original painting.

Cost for the class is $45. All supplies are included in the cost. Participants are asked to bring a lunch and also a photo to work from.

Making art satisfies a need in Campbell’s soul and helps her keep the little sanity she has. She does some photography, but mostly she works in pastels, using her photos for reference.

“The process is therapy,” she said. “I lose all sense of time and self when I’m working. Aside from satisfying the need to create something, the very best is whenever someone sees a piece of my artwork and feels a connection to it – and talks to me about it!”

A retired educator, Campbell is employed at the South Arkansas Arts Center where she is the general greeter, gallery manager, Visual Arts liaison, and Executive Assistant. She also teaches beginners’ pastel classes and Corks & Canvas classes at SAAC. Campbell participated in the “Take a Seat: A Night at the Arboretum” chair auction with “Let’s Dance!” and was accepted into the SAAC Juried Art Competition in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2017.  Her work has previously shown in solo exhibits at SAAC in 2010, 2011 and 2013. Campbell also has a solo art show coming up at SAAC in September.

Also, SAAC will host Corks and Canvas, another fun-filled evening of painting and libations on Wednesday, August 16 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.  Corks and Canvas is an art class for non-artists who have always wanted to paint.  The instructor takes the class through the step by step process to complete a work of art in three hours.

Leading the class on August 16 will be El Dorado resident and artist Cindy Snelson.  Snelson has been a lifelong crafter and artist. She dabbles in stained glass, quilting and painting.  She was nominated for the Governor’s Honors, an art program in her home state of Georgia.  When asked about her love of art, Snelson said “I am all about color!”  Her choice to paint lightning bugs that evening reflects her love of color.

Snelson has hosted Corks and Canvas at SAAC previously with great reviews from the class participants.

“Cindy is a wonderful teacher,” participant Minna Ulmer said. “She made the class fun and easy for us non-artists.  She is very laid-back and makes it very ‘user friendly.’ Cindy was very organized and had everything laid out for us – there was no way to mess it up! We all had a great time!”

Cost of the class is $40 and covers all supplies and snacks. Bring a beverage of your choice. To register for either of these classes, please call the SAAC office at 870-862-5474.
