One of the biggest days in Arkansas sports is coming up this weekend. It’s the culmination of the state’s horse racing season at Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort: the Arkansas Derby.

This Saturday, one million dollars and the chance to qualify for the Kentucky Derby will be on the line as 11 horses race to the finish line. The derby is a 1 1/8 mile race.

The top four finishers will receive points going towards Kentucky Derby qualification. The first place finisher receives 100 points, while the second through fourth place finishers will receive 40, 20 and 10 points, respectively.

There are two other major races that will be run this weekend. They include the Apple Blossom Handicap and the Fifth Season Stakes, which have a pot of $750,000 and $150,000, respectively. The Apple Blossom Handicap is a race for “older fillies and mares at 1 1/6 miles” while the Fifth Season Stakes is for “older horses at 1 1/6 miles.”
