Make fun of us all you want, but it’s in the nature of each and every Arkansan to treat a snowy forecast like the approaching fall of society as we know it. It’s as much part of our DNA as hunting, fishing, Razorbacks sports and not signaling while changing lanes.

By the time you read this, there may or may not be snow on the ground. There may or may not be ice. Really, all we’re sure of at this point is that most grocery stores will be down to mustard, ice cube trays and Spam. So grab your favorite blanket and that one pair of sweatpants that you would never think of wearing outside your home, and hunker down with AY’s winter-weather survival tips. This one goes to 11.

  1. Wonder what the person driving the snow plow does during the rest of the year.
  2. Bypass bread and milk for ice cream and red wine. Because you’re a grown-up now.
  3. Try to find that ice scraper that you bought in 2007, used once, but now desperately need if you want to drive anywhere.
  4. Go to AYmag.com and nominate your favorites for our 2026 Best Of list.
  5. Feel pangs of guilt when you realize your mailman really did brave the sleet and snow just to bring you pizza coupons.
  6. Practice saying “just calling to see if you’re open, thanks!” Because you’ll be doing that a lot.
  7. Netflix. So much Netflix.
  8. Become deeply acquainted with the “refresh” button on your favorite weather app.
  9. Mutter “oh geez, oh geez” to yourself as you gingerly navigate the ice on your front porch.
  10. Sit bolt upright in bed upon realizing you forgot to leave the faucet dripping.
  11. And finally, on a serious note, send your appreciation to all the men and women who work on our roads and power lines when winter weather hits.
