Animation Exhibit Brings Magic of Cartoons to Life in Hot Springs

The Mid-America Science Museum is set to unveil its latest traveling exhibit, “The Animation Academy,” presented by Stage 9 Exhibits. Opening Saturday, Jan. 25, and running through Sunday, May 11, the exhibit invites visitors to embark on a hands-on exploration of the history, artistry and technology behind animation.

From the golden age of hand-drawn cartoons to the revolutionary impact of computer-generated imagery (CGI), “The Animation Academy” charts the evolution of the medium and its cultural significance. Visitors will also discover the techniques behind classic Warner Bros. cartoons, featuring iconic characters like Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, and Tom and Jerry.

“Animation has been a part of popular culture for over a century, and we’re excited to bring this vibrant history to life in a way that is fun and educational for all ages,” said Diane LaFollette, CEO of the Mid-America Science Museum. “This exhibit provides a deep dive into the artistry, science and technology behind the animated films and shows we love. It also features hands-on activities that will engage visitors in the magic of animation.”

The exhibit explores stop-motion animation, highlighting the intricate work involved in bringing physical models and puppets to life frame by frame. Visitors will have the chance to interact with sets and models from well-known stop-motion films, including works inspired by animators like Tim Burton. Interactive stations allow guests to experiment with stop-motion techniques, create scenes using 3D models, and share their own animated creations.
