We admit it – we love Valentine’s Day here at AY. Any excuse to get out and about and sample good food and drink, we’re there. But that doesn’t mean you have to settle for the standard dinner and a movie on the special day. With a little creative thinking, you can turn one day with that special someone into a lifetime of memories. And if you’re on your own, don’t fret – most of our suggestions are perfect if you’re going solo.
Movies
Sometimes it’s better to skip all the people-ing, so throw on your favorite jammies (if you don’t refer to your pajamas as “jammies,” you can just leave right now), curl up and watch a romantic movie with that special someone. Our pick? James Cameron’s Titanic, a timeless story about Leonardo DiCaprio choosing true love over rafts and flotation devices.
Dining out
A timeless option, and Arkansas has no shortage of spots offering romantic dinners on Feb. 14. Just remember that it’s one of the busiest nights of the year for restaurants, so call ahead and remember that waitstaff are doing the best they can. We recommend ordering and eating an entire rack of ribs, simply because anyone who’s okay with watching that is probably a keeper.
Chocolates
Nothing says “I love you” like that unidentifiable pink filling that nobody wants.
A stuffed teddy bear
But we don’t mean any teddy bear. The Vermont Teddy Bear company offers a six-foot-tall “Giant Hunka Love Bear” for the everyday low price of $295. For best results, have it delivered to your significant other at their office with no forewarning. People love that.
Sportsball
The Arkansas Razorbacks men’s basketball team has a 7:30 tilt with Southeastern Conference stalwart Auburn in Fayetteville, with the broadcast running on ESPN. If you’re up for more V-Day hoops, Utah Tech will be facing California Baptist at 8:00. As we’re sure you know, you can throw out the record books when Utah Tech tangles with California Baptist.
Get outside
We’re cheating a bit here, because the AY Weather Center (or the weather apps on our phones, if you want to be a killjoy) calls for Saturday rain. But even if it’s not exactly on Valentine’s Day, mild temperatures are a great opportunity to explore Arkansas’ state parks. Crowds should be a bit thinner than in the summer months, but the views are still perfect for that obligatory couple selfie we know you’re going to take.
Picnic
Picnics are highly underrated as far as dates go, and your partner is sure to appreciate the extra effort. Not sure how to go about it?
