Moving into the jolliest season of the year, this next month has a lot to look forward to when it comes to celebrating. As many would agree, Christmas movies are one of the most beloved genres of film, with many streaming services dedicating entire sections of their platforms to the wonderful world of winter wonderlands. While there is certainly debate when it comes to the top classic Christmas movies, here are nine that are must-see:

Elf – PG, 2003

Everyone knows about this hilarious tale of Buddy the Elf, played by Will Ferrell, but what you may not know is that Mary Steenburgen, who plays Emily Hobbs (Buddy’s stepmother), was raised right here in The Natural State. As a comedy, this movie is now celebrating its 20th year, and will surely leave viewers giddy with Christmas spirit. Streaming on Max.

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation – PG-13, 1989

It’s nearly impossible to talk about any Christmas comedy without mentioning the biggest Christmas comedy. Brought to you by the late 1980s, this movie will have you filled with laughter regardless of whether it’s your first time watching or your 101st time watching. Streaming on Max, Hulu, Amazon Prime, YouTube TV, Apple TV and more.

A Christmas Story – PG, 1983

Another great, must-view comedy is none other than “A Christmas Story.” Based on the real-life writings of Jean Shepherd, this movie delves into the hilarious mind of Ralphie Parker – who is spending most of his holiday season daydreaming about his Christmas gift of choice. Streaming on Max, Hulu and Amazon Prime Video.

Die Hard – R, 1988

There’s a lot of debate over whether or not this movie in particular should be considered a Christmas movie. While we won’t solve that conversation today, it is important to note that the 2022 Christmas Movie study by Wishlisted concluded this was the most-popular Christmas movie in Arkansas. Streaming on YouTube, Hulu, Tubi, Sling, The Roku Channel and Amazon Prime Video.

It’s a Wonderful Life

Traveling back to the 1940s, “It’s a Wonderful Life” is also considered a comedy, with fantastical elements. Starring actors and actresses such as James Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore and Virgina Patton, this movie will surely lift any hint of the winter blues. Streaming on The Roku Channel, Sling TV, fuboTV, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube TV and more.

Home Alone

No one is as lonely as Kevin McCallister was during Christmas 1990. This movie is a classic for so many reasons, including the popular one-liners that have held up for decades now. This movie will be streaming from several platforms throughout Christmas, including Disney+, YouTube, Starz, Hulu, The Roku Channel, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video and more.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas – PG, 2000

Whoville was the place to be in the year 2000. Jim Carrey’s hilarious one-liners as the Grinch and Taylor Momsen’s adorable portrayal of Cindy Lou Who are what make the movie a classic rewatch every Christmas season. Streaming on Peacock beginning Dec. 20; available to rent on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and more.

White Christmas – not rated, 1954

There’s nothing like Christmas in the 1950s and “White Christmas” is certainly one of the oldest, and most-loved movies in the genre. With singing and dancing, this is considered a musical-comedy and, honestly, cannot be beat. Streaming on Netflix, YouTube and Amazon Prime Video.

The Santa Clause, PG, 1994

As previously mentioned, there’s a lot of great talent with Arkansas connections, including that of Judge Reinhold, who owns a house in Central Arkansas with his wife, Amy. He also brought “Laughter on the 23rd Floor” to the Arkansas Repertory Theatre. Besides all of that, he also played Neil Miller in “The Santa Clause,” which has become a staple in the Christmas movie franchise arena. Streaming on Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Apple TV, Vudu and Google Play.
