Publisher Heather Baker’s Weekend Plans: Summer Freeze, Cave City Watermelon Festival and More

Thursday-Saturday

Summer is in full force, so you know what time it is…the 39th annual Cave City Watermelon Festival is here! It’s running today through Saturday at Cave City Park, admission is free and all ages are welcome. The festival includes live entertainment, a parade, a watermelon speed eating contest, a prize melon auction, activities for kids, a free watermelon feast and more. See for yourself why they’re called the world’s sweetest watermelons!

Saturday

Cool off this Saturday at the Little Rock Zoo’s Summer Freeze event. The Snow Queen is going to make a special appearance your kids won’t want to miss! There will also be ice sculpting, a popsicle and ice cream sale, icy treats for the animals, and a watermelon eating contest between the Little Rock Fire Department and elephants. The zoo’s baby gorilla will also be officially named. Special events are happening all day, and normal zoo admission will be charged.

If you’re looking for an evening of beer, music, food and friends, look no further. The Block on Rock 5th Birthday Bash at Stone’s Throw Brewing is going on from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., and will offer up a variety of beer from Arkansas breweries. There will also be food trucks and live music. Gate admission is $5 per person, and children 10 and under get in for free. Bring blankets or chairs to sit on!

Blues on the River is happening at Burns Park, and gates open at noon. Over 20 artists will perform on two stages, including Theodis Ealey, Latimore, Arkansas Brothers and Robert Kimbrough. It’s a family-friendly festival complete with food and merchandise vendors, and there will also be a Blues and Bikes show. General admission is $29, and tickets can be purchased here:
