I don’t know about you, but every year my New Year’s resolution is to be healthier and lose the 10 pounds that I gained during the holidays! I usually vow not to eat pizza or cheese dip or processed foods for the entire month of January. Usually by January 8 I have blown it and given into my pizza and cheese dip craving.

This year I have a new resolution… to improve my skin tone and texture and protect it from further damage. There are several small changes I can make that will make a big difference in my skin over the next year.

1. Drink more water. When you aren’t drinking enough water, your skin shows it. When you are dehydrated, your skin cells shrivel up and your fine lines and wrinkles are more noticeable. When you’re fully hydrated, you have plumper, dewier skin.

2. Use sunscreen daily. You are exposed to UV rays every day! It’s so important to protect your skin by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning before leaving your house… even in the winter and even if you are just running a couple of errands. Sun rays are some of the biggest causes of lines and wrinkles!

3. Start a consistent retinol routine. I’ll be really good at remembering to use my retinol one week and then I’ll go three weeks and never use it. Retinol is the best thing for your skin. It helps with skin cell turnover, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, and helps with any pigmentation or discoloration.

4. Sleep on your back. When sleeping on your side or stomach you get “sleep wrinkles” or lines etched into your face that don’t disappear immediately when you get up. Over time, those lines start getting deeper and form permanent “sleep wrinkles” that may not fully go away with even Botox and filler.

5. Eat more Omega-3 fatty acids. Eating more Omega-3 fatty acids like fish, walnuts, flaxseed and olive oil will help your body produce anti-inflammatory compounds that help to reduce redness and puffiness.

These are five simple steps that I plan on implementing this year. Maybe once I’ve mastered these I will start working on losing my holiday weight!
