Lunching in Little Rock: The Pantry West

In our Lunching in Little Rock blog series, Michael Kirkpatrick will explore and review the best restaurants in Little Rock and its surrounding area – all in time to get back to the office. This week, Michael ate lunch at The Pantry West.

The dog days of summer are upon us.  Kids are out of school, people are taking vacation, and it’s hot. Last week, my wife Leigh had a couple days off work, the boys had no plans, and they all wanted to meet me for lunch. Don’t ask me why, but for some reason it made sense to them for me to drive to West Little Rock and meet them at a restaurant. If I am going to do all that, I am going to eat somewhere good and relaxing. The Pantry West off Rodney Parham was still a unanimous vote from everybody.

The Tomas Bohm restaurant specializes in Czech and German classics as well as other familiar delights. My sister Rebecca, who lived in Austria for a bit, says that The Pantry has the most authentic and wonderful German food in Little Rock. The atmosphere at lunch is very laid back and relaxed. This is not an in-and-out restaurant, so take it slow and enjoy the people around you and the food. Our server, Bonnie, was wonderfully attentive, carefully explained the small and interesting menu, and pointed out a few of her favorites. We all wanted something different, but started with the Boulevard Bread Co. Ciabattini, Kalamata olive spread and pesto. This was light and sharable on a hot summer day. For the mains, Willem got the German-style lasagna, Walden the classic fish and chips, Leigh the goat cheese and mushroom flatbreads, and I had to get the Weiner schnitzel. Each of us said that our own order was the best. The lasagna was the heartiest, the fish and chips were buttery, the flatbread was the most impressive, and the schnitzel was the most authentic. Even though we were completely full from our meal, Bonnie insisted we try the daily handmade cheesecake and brought us a small slice on the house.

Do you have a little extra time for lunch this week? Do you have a client that you would like to treat to a great meal? Take a European vacation right here in Little Rock at The Pantry West.
