While working in his parents’ furniture store as a youth, Bruce Goff discovered he didn’t want to just sell a sofa.

He wanted to help his customer choose the right sofa. Five years ago, the fellow with the American Society of Interior Designers moved to northwest Arkansas to retire, but it didn’t stick — he’s still helping customers pick the right sofa.

Applying their slogan, “Living Better and Working Smarter,” Goff and his team at Domus Design Group provide planning, design and project management services for a variety of clients. Local projects include corporate redesigns, public facilities, numerous residential spaces, and the occasional barn renovation.
When a former co-worker and longtime friend followed him to northwest Arkansas, it was a given that Goff would help him design his home. Goff admits it can be more difficult to work with friends. “Knowing someone this long, it’s hard to say ‘no’ and be subjective.”

His friend asked for an urban-loft-sophisticated feel in the 30-feet by 40-feet great room and kitchen space. With a cool mix of contemporary textures and color choices, he got what he asked for.

Behind the custom cabinetry, the backsplash of horizontally oriented glass tile by Eleganza Tiles pulls together several of the cool, industrial colors in the room, and adds a layer of texture to the space.

TIPS:

Space to Work. An immense island separates the dining portion of the room from the food preparation area, allowing the host to visit with his guests. The island, along with all cabinetry, was built and installed by Collins Custom Cabinets. A multistep painting process provided a smooth, automotive finish, which is enhanced by Sherman Williams paint in “Serious Gray.” The homeowner also has a background in space planning, and made conscious decisions about where each item would be stored in the kitchen, so the cabinetry was built around his belongings.

Light it Up. Purposeful light planning is crucial for effective design. The chandelier chosen for the dining area is a glass, waterfall style by Cyan Design. During the day, it catches light streaming in through the southern-facing wall of windows. At night, it illuminates with stylish ambiance. Brushed-metal pendant lights by Jeremiah Lighting were hung above the island for task lighting, and they echo the contemporary design of the kitchen’s stainless steel appliances.

Underfoot. This home is only the second all-tile home Goff has designed; the first one was for the same client. As a pet owner, Goff’s friend was determined to keep floor care as simple as possible. Large-scale tiles from Interceramic support the home’s cool palette with a medium-gray base color and a subtle, striated design.
