This cozy, multi-use room is awash in color and comfort, ready for guests or for work.

This guest bedroom/study is the work of Larry West, who has been a designer for 20 years. His portfolio includes spaces great and small, traditional and ultramodern, in homes and businesses both internationally and in the United States in Arizona, Florida, Texas and Arkansas.

This room, affectionately referred to as “the Elvis room,” so named due to the blue suede sofa and the shimmery wallpaper, is 192 square feet and doubles as a study for the lady of the house and as an extra guest bedroom, complete with sleeper sofa.

West arranged the furnishings so occupants, whether working or lounging, may take advantage of the home’s gorgeous view.

This full bath flows so well, because everything is tied together, from the wallpaper to the tile of the shower surround to the Contessa mirror. West then had Eric Phippen, owner of Penelope Design, faux finish the cabinet. The result is a bath that perfectly fits the easy elegance of the guest bedroom/study.

TIPS:

Multitask. This 4,500-square-foot home was recently remodeled, and during the process one of the guest bedrooms was eliminated to expand the kitchen. As this room is on the main floor of the home, West suggested making it a guest bedroom as well as a study.

Cover Your Bases.  One of the biggest trends is to use the same material — whether a paint, finish or wallpaper — in the same color on a room’s walls, molding, etc., and to use accessories to introduce additional colors. West said, “So in this case we used wallpaper and brought color in with accent pieces, such as the artwork.”

Step out.  The sofa was the inspiration for this room. “We started knowing we needed a really good sleeper sofa, with a great design. This fabric, from the moment we saw it, just screamed at us,” West said. “These clients have traditional tastes, and this is a step out-of-the-box for them. Step back from the norm, see what you really love and what can take you to the next level.”

Shop around.  When looking for artwork, visit galleries and bid on items at auctions and charity events. West said, “The wallpaper has its own image, so I chose artwork with texture and dimension — in a neutral color — so it wouldn’t conflict with or distract from the wallpaper.”
